Truck turning assistance system

ICA-Turn Assist AAS Set2

BMVI-compliant cornering assistant with ABE. Eligible version.

Turn assist for retrofitting with steering angle sensor.

  • Turning assistant with ABE - BMVI compliant

Collisions between commercial vehicles and cyclists and pedestrians are among the most serious accidents, especially for the more vulnerable road users. Around 60 per cent of all serious truck-bicycle accidents could be avoided by turning assistance systems, according to calculations by the German Insurers' Accident Research Association (UDV) based on its accident database.
AXION offers two versions of the turn-off assistance system in accordance with the requirements for turn-off assistance systems set by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI).

    • Turn assistance system AXION ICA-Turn Assist AAS Set 1
    • Turn assist system AXION ICA-Turn Assist AAS Set 2 (with steering angle sensor)

Following a successful technical inspection by the DEKRA Technical Inspection Centre, both variants now have a general operating permit (ABE) from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). This means that the AXION ICA-Turn Assist cornering assistance systems can now be subsidised by the Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG) via the "AAS cornering assistance systems" subsidy programme.

The ABE was issued irrespective of the vehicle type, but the following area of application is defined:
Class N2 and N3 commercial vehicles and buses and coaches (M2 & M3) with more than 9 seats including the driver's seat, which fulfil the following installation conditions. The system must be completely installed on the vehicle in which the driver receives the warning.

    • The camera must be positioned within the distance of min. 0.2 m - max. 6.0 m from the front edge of the vehicle.
    • The minimum mounting height is 2.0 m.
    • The maximum mounting height is 4.0 m.
    • Further details are described in the instructions.

The cornering assistance system (AAS) is a camera-based system consisting of a side camera for observing the monitored area, a monitor for displaying the camera image and an ECU (control unit), which analyses the information in the camera image using an intelligent software algorithm and triggers a warning in the event of defined dangerous incidents.

    How it works:
The camera of the ICA system detects the area next to the vehicle and monitors an area next to the vehicle defined during installation when turning.
The ICA-Turn Assist system uses a software-based algorithm to detect movements in this area that are classified as dangerous and warns the driver both visually and acoustically by changing the colour of the monitoring area in the monitor from green
to red, and acoustically via the buzzer included in the scope of delivery.

The system has a steering angle sensor. It is activated at half a steering angle or a turning radius of ?10 metres.

The system also has an input for a reversing camera, which can be used as an option. If no reversing camera is used with the system, the ICA Turn Assist side camera can also be displayed when manoeuvring in reverse.

There is also the option of using the ICA-WLED, a warning LED, to provide the driver with an additional warning. We recommend this as an accessory.
